Writing Practice Paper
Handwriting practice paper uses three guide lines — a baseline, a midline (dashed), and a top line — so beginning writers know exactly where lowercase letters sit, where they reach, and where they hang below. Generate it on Letter or A4 and print or download a vector PDF.
The 3-line system
- Baseline — every letter sits on this line.
- Midline (dashed) — the top of lowercase letters like a, c, e, and the middle of taller letters.
- Top line — the top of capital letters and tall lowercase letters like h, k, and l.
- Descenders (the tails of g, j, p, q, y) drop below the baseline into the next row.
Who is it for?
- Kindergarten and first-grade handwriting.
- Elementary penmanship and cursive practice.
- ESL students learning the Roman alphabet.
- Calligraphy beginners building consistent letter heights.
Letter sizes and spacing
- ⅜ inch tall lines — the standard primary-school size.
- ½ inch tall lines — for kindergarten and earliest learners.
- ¼ inch tall lines — for older students transitioning to regular notebook paper.
Frequently asked questions
What is the dashed line in the middle for?
It marks the top of lowercase letters like a, c, e, n, and the middle of capital letters and tall lowercase letters. It helps young writers learn the right height for each letter.
Is this the same as kindergarten writing paper?
Yes. Three-line writing paper is the standard for kindergarten and early elementary handwriting in the US, UK, and many other systems.
Can I change the line height?
Yes. Use the spacing input to set how tall each line group is — bigger for younger writers, smaller for older students.
Can I print it for an entire class?
Yes — there are no page limits or licensing fees. Print as many copies as you need.
Will it work for cursive practice?
Yes. The same three-line layout is used for both print and cursive practice in most curricula.
