Graph Paper for RPG Maps
Tabletop maps come in two flavors: square grids for dungeons and hex grids for overland travel. This page sets up a hex map preset and links into the generator; switch to square for interiors. For format details see the hex and isometric pages.
Square for dungeons, hex for overland
- Square grids rule dungeon and battle maps, where 1 square is often 5 feet.
- Hex grids rule the world map, where each hex is a chunk of travel.
- Both are one click apart in the generator.
Pick a scale
- Battle maps — 1 inch or 25 mm squares for miniatures.
- Region maps — ½ inch or 10 mm hexes.
- Note the scale in a corner so you do not forget it mid-session.
Print big maps
- Use Tabloid (11×17) for a sprawling overland map.
- Download the vector PDF and print poster-size at a copy shop.
- Lines stay crisp no matter how large you go.
Frequently asked questions
What grid is best for D&D maps?
Square grids for dungeons and battle maps (1 square = 5 feet is common), and hex grids for overland travel maps.
Can I print a poster-size map?
Yes. Use Tabloid size, or download the vector PDF and print it large at a copy shop without losing sharpness.
Can I change the hex size?
Yes. Adjust the spacing in the generator to make the hexes larger or smaller for your scale.
Can I switch between pointy-top and flat-top hexes?
Yes — the generator has a hex orientation control that flips between the two layouts.
