How to Print Graph Paper at Actual Size

The most common graph paper complaint is "the squares printed too small." It is almost never the paper — it is a single printer setting that scales the page down. This guide shows exactly how to print graph paper at actual size, and how to verify it with a ruler.

Frequently asked questions

How do I print graph paper at actual size?

Set the print scale to 100% (sometimes labeled "Actual size") and turn off "fit to page" or "shrink to fit". Then the grid prints at exactly the spacing you set.

Why are my printed squares too small?

Your printer or PDF viewer is scaling the page below 100%, usually because "fit to page" is enabled. Disable it and set the scale to 100%.

How do I check the grid printed correctly?

Measure several squares with a ruler. On a ¼ inch grid, four squares should be exactly one inch; on a 5 mm grid, two squares should be exactly one centimeter.

Should I print the PDF or the web page?

Print the downloaded vector PDF. It is the most reliable way to get accurate sizing and the sharpest lines.

Why does the grid not reach the edge of the page?

Most printers have a small unprintable border. Set the page margins to keep the grid inside that border, or accept a thin blank edge.
