Chinese Character Practice Paper
Chinese character practice paper — Tian Zi Ge (田字格) and Mi Zi Ge (米字格) — divides each writing cell into quadrants so beginners can place each stroke proportionally. The same paper works for Japanese kanji and Korean hanja. Print or download a vector PDF.
Print with confidence
- Use 100% scale or Actual Size in your print dialog.
- The generator creates clean vector lines for crisp PDFs and SVGs.
- Run the print calibration sheet first when exact spacing matters.
Tian Zi Ge vs Mi Zi Ge
- Tian Zi Ge (田字格) — each cell is divided by a horizontal and vertical line, forming the character 田 ("field"). The cross helps you place each stroke relative to the center.
- Mi Zi Ge (米字格) — adds two diagonal lines, forming the character 米 ("rice"). The eight-way division is helpful for very young learners and complex characters.
- For most adult learners, Tian Zi Ge is enough. Mi Zi Ge is more common in early elementary practice in China.
Cell sizes
- 15 mm — the standard size for adult handwriting practice and most textbook workbooks.
- 20 mm — easier for beginners and young learners; gives more room for complex characters.
- 12 mm or 10 mm — denser; common in advanced practice sheets and dictation work.
What is it good for?
- Learning to write Chinese characters (Simplified or Traditional).
- Japanese kanji practice (the same cell layout is used in Genkō Yōshi paper).
- Korean hanja practice.
- Calligraphy beginners learning proportions.
